With a fanfare the FM-3 from Fractal Audio was updated about 11 months ago. I bought one and decided to create the mother of all reviews and I show what in my opinion are the good points and the bad points. The FM3 is not particularly low cost at £1250.00 in the UK and bearing in mind that this area of equipment the simulators has Line 6, Fender, Roland Boss, NUX, and so many other devices is there anything that makes this stand out above the rest? Well I think there is, but not necessarily in a way that some might say.
The internet is rife with FA reviews, one after the other. You will see many from the same 'old faces' where it's possible they may have been given the gear or loaned it for a 'favorable' review? maybe or not, that's for you to decide. But for reviews that fit that methodology you only ever really see what are sales videos. Of course there are many other videos about the whole FA range, and over and over again they are trying to teach someone how to use the device. Hmm... go figure.
So I bought one from G66 (a friendly bunch of guys) and later the 6 button FC6 just because I can't dance. I decided to create as real a review that I can from the point of view of a real customer, and I show what I liked and what I did not like.
I did, as always take a good look inside this FM3 from Fractal Audio because historically I had been sold equipment that shall I say was not quite up to the reasonable standards that I expect for premium priced equipment. I show the processor, the memory, the I/O and more - no one ever does that but I believe its best to know what you're buying.
I cover the updates of firmware and discuss the top controls and back I/O. I also discuss a number of things that I think were 'OK' and many things that to be honest I don't think are reflective of a product at this price range in 2024. Watch ALL of the video because if you don't you won't see everything I mention.
There are a number of 'work around's' from others that remove issues you might/will have. For example there was a distinct delay between switching tones but with jiggery pokery you can effectively program around that. I also discuss the manuals and info in those as well as features of the FM3 according to Fractal Audio.
I do give the unit a score that I feel is correct for this amp simulator in 2024 compared to competitive guitar gear with the 'baggage' that this unit carries IMO. I have been as unbiased as it is possible to be. Would I buy another? Well that's a question - go figure...
This is not a sponsored review and it's my own opinion as an owner of the FM3. There are many points that are 100% correct. e&o.e.
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE, RING THE BELL, AND THUMBS UP to give my channel a boost and thank you for watching - I hope the video is enjoyable for you and that you see what other reviews NEVER show!.

    You sound like one of those players that think the presets will sound good. They never do, you have to adjust the eq to your pickups, amp, and speakers. A Tele's single coils will sound much brighter that modern humbuckers.

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom 18 годин тому

      I don't personally believe that. But here's the argument... you take these massive companies, Line 6, Fender, Kemper, Roland Boss, Fractal Audio... and not one of them can create decent presets? To be honest it is a little hard to believe given the wealth of those people and their long term knowledge. There are few if any that are actually great, save for the (example) Kemper player and Kemper that can simply play back what was captured - I have some captured amps on there since about 2014 or so, and they STILL sound perfect when downloaded and installed. Good point and thanks for watching.

    I appreciate Tony's approach, which is pretty unique for gear videos. I learn a fair bit from him. Do I agree with every one of his conclusions? No, but that does not take away from the value of his content. I wish he would avoid statements about specific reviewers. It feeds the trolls and distracts from the good work. Best.

    Your understanding of solid-body electric guitar physics is completely wrong. If your guitar has 50 seconds of sustain, then it means that almost nothing in the guitar is taking vibrations from the strings. Not the neck, not the bridge, not the body, nor anything else. You seem to think that body vibrations improve sustain. If body vibrations were significant, sustain would be less, not more. That's a consequence of the Conservation of Energy Law. And consistent with thirty years of complex measurements of real solid-body guitars. See the independent work of Fleischer, Zollner, and Pate. As to your "study after study after study" that refer to wood resonance, the context is acoustic instruments - which rely on string vibrations exciting the thin top plate wood to vibrate (via the mobile bridge), in order to be heard (an unavoidable consequence of which is relatively poor sustain, because the string vibrations required to drive the top plate have been lost quickly to said top plate). Electric guitars rely on pickups measuring string vibrations in order to be heard. Electric guitars have very low bridge admittance (much lower than acoustic guitars), so little vibration reaches the body (despite what players think they can feel). Which is good, because sustain would be poor if that were not the case.

      Thanks for your opinion. I did base this on documentation from a University (I think it was - it was a while back) and whatever the case, no other guitar is built this way, with these woods, and no other guitar I own comes near. That's the real point... thanks for the enlightening post and of course for watching.

      @@tonymckenziecom It's not really my opinion. It's the known, measured physics of solid-body electric guitars. Well understood by guitar scientists for some decades. Consistent with measurements of real guitars, and the laws of physics. It's just players and guitar manufacturers who often have a poor understanding of those physics (guitar builders have no training in guitar physics, and you don't need to fully understand those physics to build great guitars). The persistence (sustain) of your 100 Hz tone is in the frequency band that has been linked to the neck's resonant modal frequencies. If the strings excite the neck to vibrate the neck at that frequency, that frequency would be lost from the strings, so sustain would be reduced (as I explained earlier). The fact that it sustained for a long time means that loss to the neck did NOT occur. In fact, no part of the guitar's structure was intervening significantly to drain off the strings' vibrations at that frequency. Guitars are "subtractive" - that's what all measurements of real guitars have shown (one thing that PRS is right about). In a solid-body guitar with poor sustain around that frequency, it has been shown that you can clamp the whole neck to stop it vibrating at that frequency, and the string's sustain at that frequency then returns. Not a practical solution, but a proof that the physics are as I described. Regarding wood "roasting" (heat treatment) you mentioned, there are over 100 scientific papers in the literature on heat treatment of wood. The first started to appear in the 1980s. But most are from 2000 or later. Which is the main reason why no one used it sooner. Wood scientists didn't know it changed the wood in any useful way, nor the best ways to do it that didn't destroy the wood. Some of those papers cover industrial applications (construction), and some cover musical applications for acoustic instruments. Any sonic differences conferred on solid wood in real solid-body guitars (eg to the neck) by such treatment have not been widely studied. Some guitar builders who tout such effects are quoting the physical changes to the raw slabs of wood, not any measured effect on the performance finished guitars. For all the reasons I outlined above, you don't want wood to vibrate if a solid-body guitar's sustain is to be maximized. A roasted neck may or may not change its resonant modal frequencies in any useful way with roasting (there is limited data on that). Roasted wood is harder to work in some ways (it's more brittle). So chances are its use is as much a fad as anything else. It's not driven by objective evidence of sonic improvement in solid-body guitars. US guitar manufacturers don't make those complex measurements anyway. It does look nice, which is probably the main thing.

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom 18 годин тому

      I get the point of course... so what's your view when Paul Reed Smith sits there tapping the wood telling everyone that it matters greatly? A good question I guess :)

    • @vw9659
      @vw9659 7 годин тому

      @@tonymckenziecom If Paul Reed Smith fully understood guitar physics, he'd have much better arguments for guitar tonewood than "violins" (except there aren't any, at least for the body; the neck is another matter). Incidentally it's not obvious why people assume that guitar manufacturers fully understand guitar physics. You don't need that understanding to make great guitars (especially to 60-year old recipes, which is all the market really wants). Physics is not part of any luthier training (and PRS dropped out of liberal arts college to make guitars; he admits he's bad at maths). The physics of solid-body electric guitars is the province of a small number of experienced independent guitar physicists/engineers/scientists (mostly in Germany and France), who have been measuring real guitars for thirty years. Their published work is the basis of our understanding of how solid-body guitars work. But there's not even any evidence I've seen that solid-body guitar manufacturers are even aware of that work (there is more scientist/manufacturer collaboration by acoustic guitar manufacturers). And players are certainly unaware of it. So I guess it's understandable that those solid-body manufacturers think it's fine to stand up and talk about violins, and be believed to be guitar physics experts by some players. So what PRS says about such things is mostly smoke and mirrors. The tapping on big slabs of wood for example. Resonant frequencies change drastically when wood changes dimensions during shaping. So tapping before that is meaningless. And tapping is not measurement - measuring resonant modal frequencies of a neck for example is complex. US guitar manufacturers have neither the qualified physics/engineering staff nor equipment for that. And if you look at all the PRS factory videos, there is zero evidence even of tapping being done in their regular production processes or private stock. But people want to believe that PRS tests wood to pick those pieces that will perform best sonically. They don't. They measure wood moisture after drying it, but that's it. But of course if PRS can create a mystique around what they they do, he's going to do it. Hence tapping on big slabs of wood, and "violins", and dropping nuts on tables.

    Here's an interesting thought, most, if not all these units say "do not operate unit in moisture or do not let it get wet" , for obvious reasons, BUT, do these companies know that most of our gigs down here in Florida, & others states, are outdoor gigs! An interesting signal processing capability of the FM3 is the “envelope follower,” which function enables setting a dry un-effected sound for the lower strings, and then as you play up the fretboard, the higher notes become wet and effected, with delay, reverb, etc. That’s a pretty cool feature that I’m not aware of existing on other brands/devices.

    Fractal audio stated at the time why they changed the processor, it was due to the chip shortage. Fractal units are as complicated as you want them to be. You don’t need a FC6, you just need to be creative with your foot switch choices. Have you actually spent any time using it, because it doesn’t sound like it? I used a helix live for 5 years, then switched to fractal during the lockdowns. I ended up doing 1 gig about a year ago on a helix, using my presets, and the difference between the feel was noticeable. Fractal products are so far the best in my opinion. I’ve tried a few cheaper units from Moore and nux, I also owned a kemper for 2 years. Fractal all the way.

      Ah dancing the night away :) not for me. Hey if you like the FA stuff that's fine by me, after all you bought one! So did I. I have used most devices including Roland/Boss. Line 6. Kemper amp and player, Tonex, Head-rush, Fender Tone Master Pro and even the AXE-FX II and III. I have over the years kept what I think are best for me. I retain the Kemper since Jan 2012, the Line 6 Helix rack also since launch, the Fender Tone Master Pro (currently for reviewing) and some Roland/Boss gear along with some NUX gear too. Its true I have not spent weeks on this unit. Understand that my review shown here took me (as it is) three weeks of work and it is very different than the sales video's out there. I bought my FA gear - all of it and I'm sure that you will have learned 'something' from the review. It was also interesting about those small screens being 'bigger' and my thoughts at the time were ' I wonder how many users complained about the old smaller ones?' The FC6 was clearly developed to reduce the 'aggro' of operation with the 3 switches I think. Just a personal opinion of course. For the things I showed in general truthfully I don't need months of use, I look at hardware, speed of operation, things like those 'upgrades', the general complexity of the software and that sort of thing. To understand everything in the FM3 would literally in my opinion take months or longer. Me I just won't put the time behind the unit personally to learn 'every aspect' because I really already have lot's of gear and investing the time in the FM3 is really not something I will do. I'm surrounded by real amps (over 20) and to be honest those for me rule better than any of the simulators I have used to date. BTW I mentioned the 'obsolescence' route from personal experience and did not go back in time investigating whether FA had problems or not - truth is, many guys generally do not understand the obsolescence route and so I just threw that in as general information from manufacturing. Thanks for the post and while I did say I liked the FM3 different guys make different choices... thanks for watching too.

    Interesting info. The funny thing to me is most of these things have more processing than I think most will really use. Supporting different memory types I think isn't unusual since they don't know who will be using it and for what, but yeah, DDR3 is a bit long in the tooth, so this must be an older processor or Analog Devices is behind the curve of newer memory types? People say it's great all the different things you can tweak in their software, but you couldn't do some of those adjustments to a real amp unless you open it up and use a soldering iron and/or replace components. I don't know, I think it's just too much fiddling for my taste.

    Repeat recurring statements, as I, also, love your channel. I will throw out one "pedal" that has a few EQ "models" in it, namely the Zoom MS70-CDR (OK, it's in the "multi-stomp" category). Although I would not officially declare EQ as an ambiance effect (you can never have too many EQ "effects" throughout your signal chain), I make this pseudo-connection because stereo versus mono is a very important consideration for us people out there who are crafting tones for which stereo is a requirement for ambience effects. The Zoom MD70-CDR has a few EQ effects in it, and you have to pay attention to which "models" are mono and which ones are stereo (this is a big deal). As for an EQ pedal, it is not a stereo producer, but it should be stereo through (with apt EQ frequency adjustments applied, of course). In any case, compared to some of the other EQ dedicated devices out there, I'll just quip that my MS70-CDR pedal is way more "cost effective", but with the added benefit of being stereo capable (in/out/through and, more over, stereo producing -- depending on the effect model, of course). I have no affiliation with any vendor, but I do like things that are "cost effective" (well, at least, something isn't cheap in build quality, that is).

Multiple pictures and questions with guitar techs proving Eddie used the original SDE3000’s. Also hence the reason there’s even an EVH version of this pedal. It’s not a question of if he used them. I bought the FM3 MK 1 a number of years ago. G66 send me an email saying that they had some units in the UK and that they had B stock in as new condition which were ready to ship if I was interested? I said yes and by chance I only lived a few miles away from Sukh Ryatt who I believe now runs G66s UK operation.. So he dropped off my FM3 along with a tee shirt that was too small. Anyway to cut a long story short when I eventually started to use my FM3 which was two weeks in due to me being busy with something. I noticed that the USB socket had started to come loose. Anyway I phoned G66 who offered a repair. I didn't think that was good enough and since I was still in the period for a full refund that is what I did. It was not until later that I started digging and found out that the USB socket coming loose was not a one off. So I'm wondering if this issue has been rectified on the MK II FM3?

    You mention that 98% of people don’t care about tweaking component values of an amp and that there is a pile of options that are not on the original amp. These products cater for that 2%. You have Metallica using them to play stadium shows where they are recreating the exact tones from the albums. They have techs who work for weeks to program them to get exactly that sound. They would look at a song and say “well that song was recorded with this amp but it was modified with XYZ component values”. The Fractal products allow you to recreate exactly that. If you don’t want that then you can reset to stock values with the push of a button. I know touring musicians who can’t live without their AxeFX.

      Sure I understand your comment. They used to say John Petrucci, but of course he uses real amps... and the fx is relegated to effects? And think of it this way, I truly doubt that those 2% guys you mention would keep FA in business for a week. What does matter is that the device has to be easy to use (questionable), sound AND FEEL the same as a real amp, and of course be affordable and competitive with other similar devices. Mean Well makes good stuff. Usually around $30-$100 depending on the model (for consumers.. might be less in bulk). I have no opinion on Axe FX at all, but SMPS is reasonable. Lighter and cheaper than a transformer. Easy to replace if it goes out. Lots of amplifiers use switching supplies (guitar and bass amps, PA, Pro Amplifiers like QSC and Crown, etc).

    • @tonymckenziecom
      @tonymckenziecom 3 дні тому

      I would not disagree with that at all, but power supplies from China can be substantially less than your quoted prices. Just trust me on that - I buy thousands. Switching power supplies generally are reliable, if you buy them from the right manufacturer... and if not they can be problematic. My research did show that 'Mean Well' do make lots of power supplies so maybe these are reasonable but only time will confirm that. I raised the SMD question because for some repair guys they simply don't have the hot plate, the magnification or in some cases the skill to change the components out.
